This year the LSA Committee on Ethnic Diversity in Linguistics (CEDL) is awarding two student travel grants intended to increase the participation of ethnoracial minorities in the LSA*. Each grant in the amount of $500 assists students in traveling to the 2017 LSA Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas. Current students with and without accepted abstracts may apply for one of two types of travel grants:

  1. for graduate students who have not yet completed their linguistics degree program; or
  2. for undergraduates who want to pursue a linguistics graduate degree.

To apply, please complete the PDF form available here and send it to [email protected]. All applications must include an official university transcript and a 1-page letter of support by an advisor or professor written on official university letterhead. Graduate student applicants must also provide a detailed CV. All materials may be sent to the same email address; the letter of support should come directly to that address from the writer. Letters of support should primarily address the applicant’s current involvement with and potential contribution to the field of linguistics, his/her academic standing, his/her leadership abilities, and why the individual is a good candidate for the CEDL travel award.

All application materials must be received before midnight (Eastern Standard Time) on October 17, 2016. Incomplete applications and applications received after the October 17 deadline will not be considered. Any questions should be addressed to the CEDL Travel Grant Selection Committee using the same email address listed above.

Applicants should include in their application a clear description of their project or research interests, focusing on its potential contribution to the field of Linguistics and/or general society. They should demonstrate an understanding of the missions of the LSA and of CEDL, and of the importance of ethnoracial diversity to the field of linguistics. They should also explain why travel grant funds are needed and discuss what they hope to contribute to the LSA and CEDL at future meetings.

All Travel Grant awardees will be expected to attend the CEDL meeting at the LSA in Austin TX and provide a detailed written report of their LSA experience after the conference. Applicants will be notified of their award status by November 15.
