The LSA Executive Committee (EC) has approved a new statement [pdf] as a guide for academic departments and programs when considering documentary linguists for hiring, tenuring, or promoting. The statement focuses on those who do language documentation because of the unique challenges associated with assessing research in this area. The statement was developed in response to requests from linguists and their academic colleagues, to help inform their efforts to evaluate the scholarly research of those engaged in language documentation work.

An ad hoc meeting on this topic was convened by former LSA President Alice Harris on January 5, 2018 as part of the Annual Meeting of the LSA.  A draft of this statement emerged from recommendations made at that meeting.  The draft statement was subsequently posted on the LSA blog for comment by the membership.  The guidelines were edited based on comments by the membership and then approved by the EC.
