LSA Selects Patrick Cox for 2018 Linguistics Journalism Award
The LSA is pleased to announce that Patrick Cox, host of the World in Words podcast on Public Radio International (PRI), has been selected to be the recipient of the Society's Linguistics Journalism Award for 2018.
According to the award nomination letter: "Cox's reporting covers all areas of language from language preservation to dialectology and language and gender. His materials are highly pedagogical for their easy approach and, at times, humorist nuances to relevant language issues, yet deep and well researched."
Cox also serves as the Language Editor for PRI's hour-long radio program, "The World." The World is heard on over 300 stations across North America.
Established by the LSA in 2014, this award honors the journalist whose work best represents linguistics during the 12-month consideration period indicated in the call for nominations. The award is based on a single news story or body of work that reflects accuracy and timeliness as regards the material but is also appealing to non-specialist audiences. The call for nominations covered the period from June 1, 2017 through May 31, 2018.
The award will be presented at a special ceremony at the Society's Annual Meeting, to be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 5:30 PM, at the Sheraton Times Sq. Hotel in New York City.
