The LSA is pleased to announce the adoption of a new set of Guidelines for Inclusive Language. These new guidelines were initiated and developed by the LSA’s Committee on the Status of Women in Linguistics (COSWL) with additional input from LSA committee chairs, and approved by the Executive Committee. COSWL initiated the new guidelines as a result with their interest in updating the LSA’s Guidelines for Nonsexist Usage, originally approved by the Executive Committee in 1996. The new guidelines reflect an expansion of scope to address inclusive language more generally. The LSA encourages all linguists to follow these guidelines in their teaching, writing, research and related professional activities. Authors of papers, posters and articles appearing in LSA venues are strongly encouraged to adopt these guidelines, as are referees, editors and others involved in the peer-review process.
