Congratulations to LSA Members Christopher Kennedy and Jason Merchant, who have each been recognized with named professorships by the University of Chicago.

Christopher Kennedy, who has been an LSA member since 1993, has been named the William H. Colvin Professor in Linguistics and the College. Kennedy served as chair of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago from 2008-2015, and is an associate editor of the journal Language and the Journal of Semantics.  He has published extensively on the topics of semantics, pragmatics, and philosophy of language, and has been awarded for his teaching and mentorship. 

Jason Merchant, who is a life member of the LSA, has been named the first Lorna Puttkammer Straus Professor in Linguistics and the College. Merchant served on the Nominating Committee for the LSA from 2006-2009 and was chair from 2008-2009. He also served as an associate editor of the journal Language from 2009-2012, and has published numerous articles on syntactic theory and the interface between semantics and morphology, with particular emphasis on Germanic, Greek, Slavic, and Romance languages.
