The American Dialect Society, the American Name Society, the North American Association for the History of the Language Sciences, the Society for Pidgin and Creole Languages, and the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas will meet concurrently with the LSA.

Hotel Accommodations


The Hilton San Francisco has reserved a block of rooms for those attending the 2009 meeting. All guest rooms offer a coffeemaker, cable television, a hair dryer, a minibar, iron, ironing board, in room safe and two dual-line telephones with speakerphone.


This page originally contained a misstatement. Internet access at the Hilton San Francisco is in fact available only on the following terms: in the hotel rooms, for a fee; in the hotel lobby, for a fee that varies depending on the length of the connection desired; and on suitably equipped mobile phones. Atttendees may be be able to connect outside the hotel grounds to a variety of public wireless networks. The LSA apologizes for any inconvenience.

This extraordinary room rate will also be honored, by advance reservation only and subject to availability, from January 4-7 and January 11-14, if you would like to take advantage of the rate and extend your trip to San Francisco by a few days in either direction.

Airport Transportation

The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the Powell Street station of BART, the Bay Area Rapid Transit Metro Rail. To get to the Powell Street Station from the San Francisco Airport BART station take BART in the "Pittsburgh/Bay Point direction". The BART itself takes about 30 minutes and costs just over $5.


From the Oakland airport to the Powell Street BART station, take the AirBART shuttle from the Oakland Airport to the Coliseum BART Station, and then take BART in the "Daly City" direction. The BART+bus takes about 45-50 minutes and costs just over $6.


From the San Jose airport (SJC) to the Powell Street BART station, public transit is much less convenient, will take at least 2 hours, and is not possible at all hours. Take the VTA Airport Flyer Bus, also called the Metro/Airport 10, to the Santa Clara Caltrain station, then take the Caltrain (direction San Francisco) to the Millbrae station, transfer to the BART, and take BART in the "Richmond" direction to the Powell station. Everyone attending the meeting is expected to register. Compliance is important for keeping our fees affordable. Only those who register will be allowed to present papers, use the Job Placement Service, or attend plenary presentations.


Members planning to attend the 2009 Annual Meeting may preregister on-line from 12:01 a.m. on 1 September 2008 through 11:59 p.m. on 12 December 2008 (all times are U.S. Eastern Time). Preregistration fees for the 2009 Annual Meeting are:

Those who preregister may claim their badges and handbooks at the registration desk in the meeting area of the hotel beginning at 1:00 p.m. on 8 January. Requests for registration refunds cannot be honored. Registrants who are unable to attend the meeting will, however, be sent an Annual Meeting Handbook on request in late January. Registration will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on 8 January, from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on 9 and 10 January, and from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on 11 January.

LSA Meeting Services


More information on Child Care, the Job Placement Center, the Publishers' Exhibit, and the Sign Language Interpreting Policy will be available at a later date.


Child Care: Members who notify the Secretariat that they plan to bring children to the meeting will receive the names and e-mail address of other members who expect to bring their children to San Francisco, so that they may arrange mutual babysitting services if convenient. In addition, members may arrange for babysitting services by contacting the Hilton's Concierge directly. At the recommendation of the Officers and Executive Committee, the Child Care Assistance Fund will provide a maximum $100 stipend to offset child-care costs. Those wishing to avail themselves of this service must (1) be presenters on the LSA program and (2) notify the Secretariat no later than 1 December 2008.


Job Placement: A Job Placement Area will be available. The fee for employers wishing to list one or more jobs and/or for scheduling interviews with job applicants is $125; there is no charge for job applicants to use this service. All interviewers and interviewees are required to register for the Meeting. Click here for more information.


Sign Language Interpreting Policy: Attendees at the San Francisco meeting who need an ASL interpreter must notify the LSA Secretariat and register for the Meeting by 20 November 2008. All requests should be sent to David Robinson, Director of Membership and Meetings, at [email protected] with the words "2009 Meeting ASL Interpreting" in the subject line. Please include a list of LSA sessions and/or papers you expect to attend, including the plenary addresses, the business meeting, and the Presidential Address. (A preliminary meeting schedule will be online in mid October 2008.) All requests will be forwarded to the Interpreter Coordinator for the San Francisco meeting, who will identify qualified local interpreters, assist with scheduling, and handle day-to-day logistics concerning interpreting. Finally, if a presenter wishes to present a paper in ASL, an interpreter will be provided if requested by 20 November 2008.
