As we continue to monitor developments regarding COVID-19 (coronavirus), our Annual Meeting in San Francisco is still planned as scheduled. The health and safety of our attendees and staff is paramount, and we are carefully monitoring recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation as we move forward.

Presently, the 95th LSA Annual Meeting is scheduled to be held January 7-10 2021 in San Francisco, CA. The Annual Meeting provides the opportunity for professionals involved in the scientific study of language to share knowledge and new directions in research and practice. Approximately 60 program sessions are convened during the four-day meeting held every January  to provide participation venues and networking outlets for over 400 research papers, posters and talks and over 1100 attendees.








The LSA will meet concurrently with the American Dialect Society (ADS), American Name Society (ANS), North American Association for the History of the Language Sciences (NAAHoLS), North American Research Network in Historical Sociolinguistics (NARNiHS), Society for Computation in Linguistics (SCiL), Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics (SPCL), and the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas (SSILA).

Meeting Registration

Everyone attending the meeting is expected to register. Compliance is important for keeping our fees affordable. Only those who register will be allowed to present papers, use the Job Placement Service, or attend presentations and other functions. Registrants should wear their meeting badges at all times when at LSA Annual Meeting functions. Meeting registration fees are normally nonrefundable. 


Preregistration for the 2021 Annual Meeting will be available in late 2020.

Taking public transit to the San Francisco Marriott Marquis:

  • from San Francisco International Airport (SFO):  Take the complimentary AirTrain to the Garage G/BART Station stop.  If you arrive at Terminal G (the International Terminal), the BART station is on the Departures/Ticketing level at Boarding Area G.  Ride the BART Yellow Line train in the direction of Antioch for 10 stops, alighting at the Powell Street station.  Walk ahead one block to 4th St., turn right, and the Marriott Marquis will be on your left right after you cross Stevenson Street.
  • from Oakland International Airport (OAK): Take the Bart Train from the OAK stop located directly across from the airport terminals.  Ride one stop to the Coliseum station, then transfer to a Blue or Green Line train in the direction of Daly City, alighting at Powell Street.  Walk ahead one block to 4th St., turn right, and the Marriott Marquis will be on your left right after you cross Stevenson Street.
  • from Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC): Take the Monterey Airbus to San Francisco International Airport -- if you arrive at SJC Terminal B, exit Baggage Claim and cross the street to Stop #10 (Scheduled Buses); if you arrive at SJC Terminal A, exit baggage claim, then walk left 30-50 yards to Stop #4 (Scheduled Buses).  Alight at the International Terminal (Terminal G) and follow the directions for travel from SFO (above) to complete your trip

Job Interview Service

Sign Language Interpretation

Attendees at the San Francisco meeting who need ASL/English interpretation must notify the LSA Secretariat and register for the meeting by November 16, 2020. Presenters who plan to present in ASL must also notify the Secretariat by that date in order to ensure that interpretation is provided. All requests should be sent to David Robinson, Director of Membership and Meetings, with the words "LSA 2021 Annual Meeting ASL Interpreting Request" in the subject line. Please include a list of LSA sessions and/or papers you expect to attend, including plenary addresses, the business meeting, and the Presidential Address. A meeting schedule will be available in fall 2020. All requests will be forwarded to the interpreter coordinator for the New Orleans meeting, who will identify qualified local interpreters, assist with scheduling, and handle day-to-day logistics concerning interpreting.

Support Sign Language Interpretation at the LSA

Child Care/Nursing Room

Attendees who will be bringing children to the Annual Meeting should notify David Robinson no later than December 1, 2020 of their intentions.  Attendees will be informed of the locatin of the designated nursing room, which will be equipped with a small refrigerator.  Annual meeting presenters may be reimbursed up to $100 for child care expenses incurred in conjunction with the Meeting.

The San Francisco Marriott Marquis has reserved a block of rooms for those attending the 2021 Annual Meeting.
