This (Time) in Linguistics History: Archive
In February 2017, the LSA launched a new feature, “This (time) in Linguistics History” to be published on a periodic basis via the LSA website. We invited LSA members to submit their ideas and contributions for future history features. The feature is coordinated by LSA Archivist Margaret Thomas, in consultation with the LSA Secretariat.
- Our first feature, in recognition of Black History Month 2017, recognized Lorenzo Dow Turner
- Our second feature, in honor of Women's History Month 2017, recognized Adelaide Hahn
- Our third feature, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the publication of William Dwight Whitney's Language and the Study of Language
- Our fourth feature, a 50th anniversary tribute to Eric H. Lenneberg’s Biological Foundations of Language
- Our fifth feature, a reminiscence from former LSA Associate Secretary John Hammer about the Secretariat's transition From Volunteer Leadership to Professional Staffing in the late1960s
- Our sixth feature, in honor of Black History Month 2018, recognizes Mark Hanna Watkins
- Our seventh feature, in honor of Black History Month 2019, recognizes Mervyn Alleyne
- Our eighth feature, in honor of Women's History Month 2019, reviews the early history of the LSA's Committee on the Status of Women in Linguistics
- Our ninth feature, in honor of the premiere of a film documentary about LSA foundation member Moe Berg
- Our tenth feature, in honor of Pride Month, and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, is an essay about Lavender Language/Linguistics
- Our 11th feature honors Victoria A. Fromkin, on the 40th anniversary of her election as Secretary-Treasurer of the LSA.
- Our 12th feature, in honor of LGBTQ+ History Month, is as essay about OUT in Linguistics.
- Our 13th feature, in honor of Women's History Month, celebrates the accomplishments of Christine Mohrmann, the LSA's first woman Honorary Member.
- Our 14th feature, in honor of Women's History Month, celebrates the accomplishments of Louise Pound, the first woman to publish a research paper in Language (among many other "firsts".)
- Our 15th feature, honors the pioneering Haitian linguist, Anténor Firmin, on the 170th anniversary of his birth.
- Our 16th feature, honors former LSA President Eric Hamp, on the third anniversary of his death and coinciding with Kosovo Independence Day.
The trigger event for this periodic feature could be an important day, week, month or year in the history of the LSA and/or the field of Linguistics. We are happy to publish as many features as often as LSA members are willing to contribute. Please submit your ideas via e-mail to Margaret Thomas or Alyson Reed.
