The inaugural Excellence in Community Linguistics Award was presented earlier this month to Mary Ann Metallic (Listuguj Education Directorate - Listuguj Mi'gmaq Government) for her exemplary work to revitalize the Mi’gmaq language in her home community of Listuguj, Quebec. Her infectious passion for Mi’gmaq has led to the development of a successful teaching program, and her work with linguists has resulted in significant contributions to language documentation and linguistic theory.

The Excellence in Community Linguistics Award recognizes the outstanding contributions that members of language communities (typically outside the academic sphere) make for the benefit of their community’s language. The contributions made by awardees may be varied, including, among other things, documentation work with a linguist as a consultant and efforts towards language revitalization.  The award was announced in late 2013 and read during an Awards Ceremony at LSA Annual Meeting in January 2014, but Mary Ann Metallic was unable to be present to receive it.

Mary Ann Metallic (r.) is presented with the Inaugural Excellence in Community Linguistics Award by Listuguj Elder Kathy Sorbey.
